Overland tours through Qinghai, Gansu and Northern Sichuan:
Experience the Diversity of China’s West
Qinghai, Gansu and Sichuan Provinces are made up of many different cultures and ways of life. The various ethnicities and lifestyles that surround each group’s way of life provide for a unique experience. Han, Hui, and Tibetan cultures are present throughout these regions and their farming, nomadic, and village lifestyles are abundant as one group’s area merges into the next. Stunning geological features mixed with cultural and religious sites also deepen the experience.
Some of the Highlights:
Beginning from the North
It is best to fly or train to Lanzhou or Xining. These cities serve as the starting point for our overland tours.
Located in the town of Xiahe, Gansu, Labrang Monastery is one of the six great monasteries of the Gelugpa order of Tibetan Buddhism. This monastery and the town of Xiahe are a great place to see the cultural heart of Amdo Tibet.
Also a monastery town, Langmusi is home to two distinct monasteries – one in Gansu and one in Sichuan. Don’t think of it as just another monastery town, however, as the surrounding area is somewhat Alp like with it’s towering stone peaks and beautiful trails that provide great day hiking. It is also home to the Tiger’s Den and Goddess Caves which are great for exploring.
Tangke Grasslands and Yellow River
After exploring the valleys of Gansu, our overland tour brings you to the vast stretch of grasslands in Ruo er Gai, where Tangke is located. These huge stretches of land are home to Amdo Tibetan nomads who have been keeping their herds of yak and sheep here for centuries. The first major bend of the Yellow River just outside of Tangke forms the boarder with Gansu and is home to thousands of nomad families. Adventure Access has teamed up with a local family in the region to provide the most authentic nomad experience available. Learn about and participate in daily nomad life through milking yaks and making cheese and butter. Learn how to setup the traditional Black Tent (where you will be sleeping). Ride horses, experience local foods, and enjoy the Yellow River region near their camp.
Songpan and Jiuzhaigou
Not just home to the National Parks of Jiuzhaigou, Huanglong, and Muni Valley, but these two counties are perfect for activities such as biking, hiking, climbing, etc.. Days could be spent seeing and doing all that Songpan and Jiuzhaigou have to offer. Songpan makes a great hub for all of the destinations and activities that only Adventure Access can offer. Songpan Ancient Town is also a melting pot of Han, Hui, and Tibetan cultures.
